Horsemanship
All students will have the opportunity to ride during the summer. We encourage teens with little or no experience to come out to the Horse Barn and get acquainted with these wonderful animals.
At Longacre, we employ natural horsemanship techniques both on and off the saddle. Natural horsemanship allows horse lovers at all levels and disciplines to achieve "...success without force, partnership without dominance, teamwork without fear, willingness without intimidation, and harmony without coercion..." (Pat Parelli).
We offer more than a “riding program” at Longacre Leadership. Teenagers have the opportunity to learn all aspects of horsemanship from stable management to trail riding. Many of our eight horses have been rescued and rehabilitated, and participants become part of the process, caring for and learning about their health, training and management.
Teenagers who choose to work with horses can:
- Learn to ride English, western, and bareback. Beginners start riding in the ring under close supervision. Those who have demonstrated enough skill and confidence are invited to join excperienced staff on miles of trails around the farm..
- Learn to halter, brush, and tack up our horses when we get them ready to ride.
- Feed and care for our horses.
- Help the farrier or the veterinarian when they come to our barn to service our horses.
