Farming

At Longacre Farm, we raise animals on pasture and grow organic vegetables, grains, and fruits. We teach a philosophy of farming that reaches far into the future, preserving wildlife habitat for threatened species and building healthy soils.

Farm Animals

  • During daily animal crew, teenagers share the responsibility of feeding and watering our cows, sheep, chickens, goats, horses, pigs and barn cats.
  • Most of our animals live on pasture and participants learn about rotational grazing by assisting in daily animal movements.
  • Interested participants can milk our Nubian goats and make luscious goat milk soaps.
  • We collect eggs each morning and afternoon.
  • Interested participants can intern for a day with a local veterinarian.

Organic Produce

  • Longacre Farm has had an organic garden since 1970.  Each year, we plant, mulch, water, and harvest loads of organic vegetables.
  • Every two weeks, participants rotate into garden crew and learn how to cultivate and harvest vegetables to deliver to the kitchen crew for preparation.
  • Fruits grow all over the farm, and teenagers can choose to harvest them and learn how to make delicious jams, pies and smoothies!

Farm Machinery and Facilities

  • Teenagers can participate in tractor school and learn how to operate our John Deere and International tractors.
  • Our tractors and our farm truck run on biodiesel fuel, which we produce from used restaurant fryer oil in our biodiesel lab.  Teenagers can choose to participate in the biodiesel brewing process.
  • Since keeping animals requires more than just feeding them, we work together to build, maintain, and repair stalls, shade structures and fences around the farm.

Most farm-work is scheduled during the cooler summer mornings.  However, passionate teens often choose to work with animals and equipment throughout the day.  There's always a ton to do on a farm!
