Carpentry and Construction

Each summer we have multiple large-scale carpentry and construction projects happening on the Farm.  We have built a greenhouse, fences, hay wagons, composters, decks, barns and even entire buildings.  Longacre students have built many of the buildings we use today.

Safety is our primary concern, and adults supervise every carpentry and construction activity on the Farm.

At Longacre, students interested in carpentry can:

  • Learn how to use hand and power tools.
  • Learn how to use levels and bracing techniques to build sturdy structures.
  • Distinguish between different types of wood.
  • Work on projects of varying size, based on comfort and skill level.
  • Build bat boxes and bluebird nesting boxes.
  • Construct picnic tables, benches, one-on-one seating areas.
  • Initiate and lead projects of their own choosing.
  • Build dazzling sets for the theater productions.
